end of the year update
Generating Ideas:
This year I have had many strengths as far as generating ideas for projects and planning to solve problems. For example, in our explorations this year I have always been prone to stop myself from jumping the gun when I see a problem and rather slow down and make a plan on how I’d like to solve the problem. When I see a problem I try to identify what operations I need to solve it, and then I think of the order that I need to use them. At the same time, I sometimes feel a lack of motivation to start problems, for that reason I don’t always get the best energy to start a problem how I should. In the end, when my day is going well and I feel the motivation to work I always have a strong ability to generate ideas in algebra 2.
Communicating:
Over the course of this algebra 2 course the seminars in class have been very engaging, however, I have had a few problems with communicating my work verbally in seminars to my peers. When I do work from my explorations at home I often think mentally without writing out my work. With this strategy, I set myself up to fail when I show up to class the next day and completely forgot what I did to solve problems. When I am communicating with my classmates about how they have solved their problems I often have to have them clarify by writing on the board because I learn best when I can do it visually. When there are kids in my seminar group who are sometimes quiet I feel like I have a strength by asking them to speak out. This is easy for me because I am the opposite of shy. Overall, I feel like I grew in my communication over the year although I started out with come struggles.
Recognizing and Resolving Errors:
During this year, there have been many times that I have been able to recognize errors in my work. I have done this many times by trying to plug my answers into equations or graphs to see if they check out. When I feel like I am getting answers that are wrong I often times go back and go through the problem step by step to make sure that I have done everything correctly. Sometimes I like to try and solve problems using mental math, when I do this I’ve found that I am often incorrect. When this happens I write out the problem on paper how i pictured it in my head and I try to prove it to be right or wrong before I make the jump to turning it in.
Reflection and Synthesizing:
When reading complicated word problems throughout the year, it has been important to synthesize the problems and number to be able to understand and follow the units. Especially during our unit conversion section, it was easy to lose track of units. Overall, reflecting on the year as whole it has been a blast. I had a great time learning about all of the complex concepts that are a part of algebra 2. I had a hard time adapting to the new style of class with the seminars, but overall I think that it helped me grow immensely and I can’t thank Dan enough for being bold enough to change the trend and let us try something new. The year has helped me grow as a student and my knowledge of math has skyrocketed. I am glad that I was able to take this class and I believe that the concepts that I learned will carry me through my college career and the rest of my life.

semester reflection
Content skill: Exponential Growth and Decay Mastery.
Master skill: formulating a plan
I showed mastery through my POW's this year and in my note taking, one of the strategies that I used the most this year was the ability to formulate a plan. In stage 2 of POWS you are supposed to formulate a plan. When I initially would read the POW's, it was important for me to develop and initial plan so that I didn't get confused in the process of completing the POW.

problem solving skill: asking clarifying questions
This year, in my explorations I had a hard time figuring out how to do some of the calculations with the problems. In order to help me understand how to complete my assignments, I would ask many questions to clarify in our seminars. We had a list of seminar extension questions that we had from Dan that we were supposed use after every seminar. As the semester progressed I started using the clarifying questions as I completed the explorations to help me and it worked!
