Overall, this internship has been unbelievable. The experiences that I've had here will never be replicated. I have made lasting friends at CCV and in Phoenix and have learned a ton from all of them. My mentor, Danny Larsh, has been incredible. He has made me feel at home and shown me the ropes of the everyday worship leader. This internship has made me realize that I want to pursue being a worship leader and I won't stop until I can make it happen. Phoenix has been great, and this wouldn't have been possible without the LINK internship from Animas High School.
Today was great, as most Sunday's are for churches. In the morning we went to the 9 AM service at Peoria where Jordan Howerton led a great worship set. The set was followed by an awesome message from Pastor Don Wilson. After church we went back to the hotel where we made lunch and then rested by the pool for a few hours. Immediately after the pool I headed back to Peoria for the high school service rehearsal. Unlike most nights we had a 4 song set so it was a longer rehearsal than normal. The whole set was filled with great tunes and we had a really solid band for the whole thing. CCV Resident Brian Bardzik led the service and I got to play beside him for the biggest show of the internship so far. Both building 600 and 4000 were combined and the whole service was about 450 people. That was awesome and was the last time I would get to play with CCV for my internship. It's been crazy how fast time has gone by since I've been here.
Today was pretty great, after driving from Prescott back to Phoenix I went to the Peoria Campus of CCV to grab my guitar gear for the night's Junior High service. After I practiced alone at CCV for about an hour I got on the road again and headed towards Scottsdale where I was meeting my parents for a late lunch before checking into the hotel that we will be staying at all week. Once we were all checked in I went to the pool for about an hour before I headed to the Scottsdale CCV campus. After a 2 hour rehearsal with a whole lot of kinks and problems, we fixed our issues and played a great service for the middle school kids. It was a blast and I got to play with another one of the CCV residents named Evan, that was super fun. The night ended with some celebrating at Chipotle.
This day off was remarkably boring until the late afternoon. Because I had nowhere to stay for Thursday and Friday night I had to drive to Prescott where my parents were staying. For about 4 hours we looked at homes for my parents in the area. As you could probably imagine I wasn't having the greatest time because I hate the thought of leaving Durango. Anyway, when that was finished we went to the movies and I saw London Has Fallen while my parents saw Miracles From Heaven. That was a nice ending to the day.
Today was fun, I got to sing some more backup vocals for some of the tracks that they will be playing in the adult services. I also got to go to a few meetings. Other than that the day was really just filled with guitar practice for the weekends services. For Saturday I will play at the Scottsdale Campus for Junior High, and on Sunday I play at Peoria for High School. After leaving CCV for the day I went to a GCU basketball game against Mississippi, from there I drove 2 hours to Prescott, AZ to stay with my parents.
Today has been interesting so far, I came in at 9:30 as usual and just sat down to work for 3 hours. Danny was really busy all morning. He had meeting's from the get go so the morning was pretty open for what I wanted to accomplish. I worked on my song for about an hour and then I hit a mental block. I was having a hard time figuring out good chords to put into my bridge and was lacking motivation for writing lyrics. I don't know how my song is coming along to be honest, I feel like it isn't my best piece of music that I've written. Either way, my project for this internship was really to gain experience as a worship pastor and I've already gotten some really good experience doing that thus far. I want my song to turn out being great but I don't know right now, sometimes I just need some external feedback so that the opinion is unbiased. After I took a break from writing my song I played guitar for about an hour and a half and I worked on some John Mayer leads that I've wanted to learn for a long time. After that I spent some time going over this weekend's show plans on planning center, I am scheduled to play for a junior high service on Saturday at the Scottsdale campus and then for Sunday for high school at the Peoria campus. They should both be really fun, I haven't ever been to the Scottsdale campus so that will be a nice change. After going over the plans and music, there was an all staff meeting in building 4000 with lunch. All of the staff from every campus were there and it was pretty awesome to see really just how many people are behind the great presentations that CCV give each week. Senior Pastor Don gave out some awards for outstanding employees, and then talked about the things that the staff needed to work on and prepare for for the big Easter services. From there we went to a meeting about the next weekend worship services and series' and that was brief because we arrived late. From there I was asked by AJ, the sound tech and drummer extraordinaire to come and sing group vocals on some tunes for the weekends youth worship and a few more tracks for Jordan's new music project. That was fun and it was another great experience for me to get to interact with all of the other singers. That pretty much concluded another great day working at CCV.
This day has been rad from the start, in the morning I got to come in and work on my song from the get go. At 10:30 we had a resident meeting to discuss how the weekend went for all the youth services. It was really cool to hear all of the different perspectives from the different campuses. Everyone had pros and cons, but mostly pros. From there we went to a similar meeting but for the adult portion. All of the different worship leaders from each campus talked about how their acoustic weekend went. All of the pros a cons I heard were really cool because they were things I never would have even noticed, it just goes to show how dedicated they are to always getting better. Then Danny and I went to lunch and had a nice long talk about my experiences in Durango with churches and music. From there we went to a brainstorming meeting for a upcoming teaching series on having a game plan in our lives. It was a nice opportunity to get the creative juices flowing with a bunch of smart adults. The day finished with taco Tuesday at Joyride Restaurant.
Because the weekends are so busy for CCV, Monday is the typical off day for my mentor, Danny. Although it was a day off for me it was still full of things to do. In the morning I had to to to urgent care to get my neck and head checked out from my car accident on Saturday. Urgent care turned me away and said that I had to go to the ER. At the ER I spent 2 1/2 hour getting a checkup to make sure I wasn't concussed. It took a solid chunk out of my dad but it had to be done. From there I went home to rest a little bit before the rest of the big day. I left Matt's apartment at 2:30 to go to the GCU campus to go to the pool with my sister Riley. After swimming for a hours we went to the GCU basketball game. I haven't ever been to a big basketball game before and apparently there was no better place for a person like me to get rowdy as a fan. GCU apparently has the most intense and energetic student section for cheering. They had a bunch of purple and white shirts in the stands. The game was intense and fast paced and it was super fun to see live as opposed to on TV. The game came down to one or two points in the end and it was a ridiculous nail biter to watch. In the end the GCU Loped pulled through and the game as a whole was a blast. From the basketball game we went to watch some intramural volleyball games, and that pretty much concluded the night at around 10:30.
Today was a really good day, considering it's a Sunday and I'm interning with a church there was a lot going on today. In the morning, Matt, Riley, and I went to the 10:30 AM service at the church's main campus in Peoria, AZ. We went a little bit early so we could get breakfast at the church's cafe before we went into the service. Once we went in the service the music began. This particular weekend happened to be acoustic weekend meaning that the entire service was played "unplugged" and there were no electric instruments except for the bass. During this whole week I have been getting to see all of the worship leaders prepare for this weekend's service, but I had no idea how awesome it would be. The amount of presence that the band brought with all acoustic instruments was unbelievable. Jordan Howerton led the service and had Ben Gowell and Jess to accompany him on vocals. It was honestly one of the best services I have ever been to, the music was followed by communion and a great message from Senior Pastor Don Wilson. After the service was through we went back to Matt's apartment before I had to leave for a 2:45 rehearsal time back at the Peoria Campus for the nights High School Experience service. The service started at 5 PM and we got to play some fun tunes, one was by one of my favorite artist's Phil Wickham. Danny led the service and it was really cool getting to play live with my mentor beside me. The music ended up going really well and it was a great Sunday. Today was Awesome until the very end, I got to sleep in until 9 O'clock and then made an awesome breakfast. From there Matt and I went to pick up Riley from GCU to go to Top Golf. Top golf is a place that you can rent a booth and shoot golf balls into an open driving range with targets, all the while you can order food and listen to music and have a blast. It is kind of like a bowling alley for golf. After a short amount of down time I had to head to CCV for my rehearsal for the nights junior high service. After rehearsal I got to play a guitar for a youth service with a ton of people. It was an awesome experience and it went really well. To finish off my night, I got rear ended driving home. So that was cool.
